A friend I haven't seen in forever, because my now-ex girlfriend didn't like her, just invited me to a party at their place. Only catch is, their place is in Tennessee and I am in Rhode Island.

Priced plane tickets and a rental car and I'd probably be into the whole trip(taxi, tickets, rental, gas, etc.) for about $500. No hotel as they said I could crash at their place. That won't break the bank, but it'll make for 2-3 very lean weeks paying my bank account back for it.

It would also involve missing another party a more local friend invited me to.

Just being indecisive and wanted to put it into words. Enjoy a Datsun pickup from a local car show for your time.

Which one will be more epic? Also, is this a friend you are wanting to reconnect with and eventually have as a good friend? Or is this a Haven'tSeenYouInAWhileHey type of trip?

This is it - the Forecasted Scale of Epicness Party Measurement System.
If you use that logic than you will be safe.

Figure out what your money to fun ratio is and stick to it. Only thing I will say one of the greatest faults I've had in my personal life is not staying in touch with people I care(d) about. Caveat Emptor and all that shit.

YOLO bitch. Do you really want to tell your kids to think Conservatively for their entire lives? Don't spend your money, save it up until you are either unable to use it or there is no one to share it with. Plus Tennessee is fucking legit, we are a free state, it's not snowing, nor is it really that cold yet.

The TN trip would likely be more epic, but also involves flying both ways which I really don't like(32 hours driving round trip isn't really a valid possibility).

Definitely someone I want to reconnect with, we're both crap at keeping in touch with people so that with the distance and my ex's attitude has meant we talk 1-2 times a year lately.

Flying isn't to be avoided necessarily. Especially if it's going to be a better time and you haven't connected with them in a while. Might just make you guys stay in touch better.

You're going to spend $500 to go to a party for a night/day? Eff that.

It is more what else I could spend it on. A snowblower so I don't have to shovel so much, upgrading the truck to a sweet three speed overdrive, half a Shelby Cobr a, etc.

FWIW I looked at buses and trains from Providence to Memphis (guessing) and they were not really great for what you want. Only a bit cheaper, and Amtrak would send you from Providence to New York Penn to Chicago (dafuq?) to Memphis. Burning an entire day to save $150.

Plane tickets are about $200-250 depending on when I fly and it is a 4 hour flight with layover so yeah, train/bus won't gain me much.

Tennessee is beautiful this time of year. Plus, since you would be there on the weekend, you would get to experience the lunacy that is SEC football Saturday! Quit yer bellyachin' and get your butt on the plane!

nice to see another Rhode Islander on oppo. My take: go for it, if its only gonna take 2 or 3 weeks of trimming the budget then it's worth it.

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe it got you close enough to avoid a rental car, as bus depots/train stations can be in cities instead of at the perimeter.

Is the local party with a good friend of yours or with a female friend you're trying to have fun with? I'd personally take the trip, but then again I'm one to make long trips for fun. Just make sure you enjoy the heck out of it and make sure no little thing lets you not enjoy it

Local party will have a large swath of local friends there that I see varying often. Purpose would be for hanging out and general merriment.

Their place is about 5 miles past the middle of nowhere and is an hour from anything resembling civilization. So rental is going to be needed either way.
